About

Michael Cerda-Jara is a formerly incarcerated, first-generation Chicano from Newark, CA. Using his lived experience as a guide for his work, Michael hopes to change how people who have experienced the carceral state are negatively portrayed in society. He aims to impact policy and contribute to the discourse on the collateral consequences of mass incarceration. He is an Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education (EDGE) fellow with a BA in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.

*** As a formerly incarcerated/first-generation/low-income student, I welcome opportunities to discuss applying to Stanford’s PhD program in Sociology, as well as undergraduate studies at the University of California system with any prospective formerly incarcerated and POC students. Please feel free to reach out via email with "Prospective Student" as the subject line. ***
