Mardi Bijleveld featured in Stanford Transportation commute spotlight

Mardi Bijleveld, administrative associate in the Department of Sociology, and her husband, Wouter Huiting, a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, are featured in Stanford Transportation’s August Commute Spotlight for their creative approach to getting to and from campus.

For the past year and a half, Mardi has biked 30 minutes to campus each morning while Wouter drives their son to daycare before heading to work. At lunchtime, Mardi bikes to Wouter’s office, where they trade the bike for the car key. “We get to say hello in the middle of the workday, which is nice,” she said. At the end of the day, Mardi picks up the car from Via Ortega Garage and drives to get their son, while Wouter takes his turn biking home.

The arrangement allows them to manage daycare pickup with one car while making cycling part of both of their daily commutes.
