David Grusky, Cecilia Ridgeway officially welcomed to the National Academy of Sciences
Albert Einstein memorial on the NAS grounds.
David Grusky, the Edward Ames Edmonds Professor and Chair of the Sociology Department, and Cecilia Ridgeway, the Lucie Stern Professor in Social Sciences, Emerita, were formally welcomed into the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., on April 25–26. Both were elected to the NAS in 2025, joining a small and distinguished group of scholars recognized for their exceptional contributions to science and social science. The NAS serves as a scientific advisory body that provides independent, expert advice to the U.S. government and the public.
Grusky, who also directs the Center on Poverty and Inequality, was elected in recognition of his influential research on the structure of poverty, social and economic mobility, and gender and racial inequality in late modernity.
Ridgeway was elected for her path-breaking work on interpersonal status hierarchies and their significance for broader processes of stratification and inequality in society, particularly inequalities rooted in social differences such as gender, race, and social class.
