Asad L. Asad wins prestigious award for his 2023 book "Engage and Evade"
Asad L Asad won the prestigious C Wright Mills award for his 2023 book Engage and Evade: How Latino Immigrant Families Manage Surveillance in Everyday Life, published by Princeton University Press.
The award, selected by the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP), is "one of the most coveted and competitive awards given to social scientists," according to the society's executive director. Asad's work was lauded for - among other criteria - critically addressing an issue of contemporary public importance, bringing a fresh, imaginative perspective to the topic, and advancing the social scientific understanding of immigration. The book addresses how all forms of surveillance threaten undocumented immigrants, but also offer hope for social inclusion.
