"Pathways of Gentrification in the Changing American City"

In this talk, I explore how gentrification unfolds along racial and ethnic lines across time in U.S. urban neighborhoods. I show that gentrification historically follows a racial order similar to that found in general patterns of residential stratification. These racial patterns, however, are also structured by the compositional characteristics of a metropolitan area’s affordable neighborhoods. To account for these patterns, I present a new framework for understanding neighborhood change and stability in low-cost neighborhoods. By uncovering how gentrification relates to both neighborhood-level and city-level composition, this project explains how gentrification contributes to the persistence of neighborhood inequality by race in U.S. cities.
