Concentration in Sociology (if you have one): Organizations, Business, and the Economy

Why I'm majoring in Sociology: I’m majoring in Sociology because I’m intrigued by the roles of race, ethnicity, and class in affecting privilege and upward mobility in the world around me.

What I like best about Sociology: The thing I like best about Sociology is its interdisciplinary nature. I never feel academically or intellectually confined.

Favorite class / professor (and why): My favorite class is The Changing American Family by Michael Rosenfeld because it was the first Sociology class I took, and it inspired me immediately to change my major to Sociology. The class is my favorite because it brought several aspects of my upbringing into perspective.
Favorite book (and why): I haven’t done leisure reading in YEARS, but my favorite book is The Face by Dean Koontz because it was a thrilling read that kept me enthralled from beginning to end.
Career goal / Future plans: After graduation I plan to work in public relations or marketing at a tech company in Silicon Valley for two years before returning to business school. Afterwards, I plan to officially revamp and launch my event planning company, Quinn Productions.
Other academic interests (majors, minors): I have a minor in psychology and have worked in the Mind, Culture, and Society lab under Hazel Markus and Jennifer Eberhardt.
Extracurriculars: I’m an active member of the Black Psychology Student Association, Black and Queer at Stanford, and Stanford Fashion Society. I also work as Logistics Coordinator of the QuAD program at the LGBT-CRC.
Something else you should know about me: I I have an immense love for technology and enjoy being connected. I am also an avid Apple, Inc. fan.

Cherrie Randle

"I am a senior from Dallas, Texas. My major is Sociology with a minor in African and African American Studies. I am the founder and current president of the Black Society of Sociology Students. With classes such as “The Urban Underclass” and “Race, Ethnicity, Religion, and Health”, Sociology has guided me towards my interest in Public Health. I love the sociological intersection between medicine and culture and its implications towards relevant issues such as universal healthcare.

In addition to being a peer mentor, I am also a Peer Health Educator in my dorm. I am also currently a research assistant in the Medical School. This past summer I was a Residential Teaching Advisor for a high school program called LEAD, which is aimed at getting minority students interested in business. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, music, and Japanese anime. Feel free to talk to me about sociology, health, or anything else for that matter. I look forward to meeting you!"

Concentration in Sociology (if you have one): Organizations, Business, and the Economy

Why I'm majoring in Sociology:  I am majoring in Sociology because I am interested in learning about the social behavior of different societies and how people form into and interact in groups and organizations.

What I like best about Sociology: I like how Sociology can be readily applied to both universal and specific topics across various academic disciplines and professional careers.

Favorite class / professor (and why): My favorite class has been “Classics of Modern Social Theory” taught by Monica McDermott because Professor McDermott’s engaging style of teaching really brings to life the founding ideas of sociology. This class provided me with a theoretical framework I have used time and time again to understand more specific concepts addressed in many other courses at Stanford, in and outside the Sociology department.
Favorite book (and why): My favorite book is Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. Dick because it explores ideas concerning the metaphysical, and carnal existence of human reality and the uncertainty that is constantly feared by and associated with the coming future.
Career goal / Future plans: After I graduate I seek to attend film school—where I aspire to become a director of both documentary and narrative films in the industry of independent cinema.
Other academic interests (majors, minors): I am also minoring in Film and Media Studies. I am interested in how the medium of cinema reveals and conditions the cultural identity and, in particular gender roles of society in different time periods and how that process works in reverse.
Extracurriculars: I am the General Manager of Stanford’s University’s Non-Commercial radio station KZSU 90.1 FM. I am also the president and the co-founder of the Cuban American Undergraduate Student Association—CAUSA.
Something else you should know about me: I enjoy making short-films about relevant social issues and playing guitar and singing in a band I started with my sister.
